Missed bin collection? Here's exactly what to do
By The BinMinder team
You put the bin out, the lorry's been down the street, and yours is still full. Annoying — but usually fixable, if you act within a day or two. Here's what actually works, based on how UK councils handle missed collections.
First: leave the bin out
It feels wrong, but don't wheel it back in. Most councils' policy is to return for a genuinely missed bin within 1–2 working days — and the crew won't knock. If the bin isn't at the kerb when they come back, that counts as your miss, not theirs, and you could be waiting until the next scheduled round.
Second: check it was actually missed
Before reporting, rule out the common gotchas — councils will reject the report if any of these apply:
- Was it out by 6–7am? Crews vary their routes, and an early lorry plus a 7:30am bin is the single most common cause of a "missed" collection.
- Was it a bank holiday week? Collections often shift by a day for the whole week. (BinMinder reminders already account for published bank-holiday changes.)
- Was the bin contaminated? A recycling bin with a bag of general waste on top usually gets left, often with a tag explaining why.
- Was the lid closed? Overfull bins with propped-open lids are refused by many councils.
Third: report it fast
Nearly every council has a "report a missed bin" form — search your council's name plus "missed collection", or find your council's page in our council list and follow through to their site. The crucial part is the deadline: most councils only accept reports made within 1–2 working days of the missed collection. Miss that window and they'll usually tell you to wait for the next round — which for fortnightly general waste means two more weeks of a full bin.
If collections are missed repeatedly, keep reporting each one. Councils track missed-collection stats per round, and repeat reports are what get a route reviewed.
The fix that prevents most of it
The evening-before habit solves the early-lorry problem completely: bin out the night before, no 6am guesswork. That's exactly what BinMinder is for — a free reminder the evening before every collection, matched to your council's actual schedule (bank holidays included), for more than 9 in 10 UK councils.
